THE COUNCIL flag is flying at half-mast over Lerwick Town Hall as a mark of respect for former councillor Maisie Colligan, whose funeral takes place today (Friday).

The former teacher served as councillor for the Delting area from 1990 to 2003.

Over her 13 years of service she held key roles, including vice chair of the environmental services and housing committees, and spokesperson for the education forum.

The council said she was a member of numerous committees covering education, planning, transport, social work, housing and public health.

AFTER 70 years in the same family Universal Stores – and its eye-catching bright yellow exterior – is up for sale.

The sweetie and flower business is up for sale as its current owners look to move on.

THERE is a change in name at the Shetland Times Bookshop in Lerwick.

It is now going under the name The Shetland Bookshop.

It comes after Shetland Times Ltd put its assets, including the bookshop, for sale earlier this year.

However it was confirmed that the bookshop would be staying open, with Shetland Times Ltd ceasing newspaper and printing activities. The newspaper business was sold to Highland News and Media.

The bookshop company will now be known as The Shetland Bookshop Ltd.

THE B9071 road at Garderhouse will remain closed until Friday 26 September to allow for work to continue on installing new safety barriers.

The SIC said the initial intention had been to temporarily open the road between Friday 25 July to Monday 11 August – but this has unfortunately proved to be “impossible”.

The council’s roads service said it would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.
