News / Coastguard and RNLI responding to reports of possible boat sinking
THE COASTGUARD rescue helicopter and the Lerwick lifeboat are responding to reports of a boat possibly sinking off the west coast of the South Mainland of Shetland.
The coastguard said it was called to the scene at around 2.15pm, with the Sumburgh search and rescue helicopter currently on the scene.
The Lerwick lifeboat is also currently attending, along with coastguard crews from Lerwick, Sumburgh and Hillswick.
Crews are searching for a “small skiff” type vessel, which is thought to have been taking on water.
The search and rescue helicopter is searching the coastline near to St Ninian’s Isle at present.
The coastguard said it could not confirm further details as the incident is ongoing, but said the boat was located off the west coast of Shetland.
