News / Woman dies after falling from cliff at St. Ninian’s Isle
A SEVENTY year old woman has died after falling at the cliffs on St Ninian’s Isle earlier today (Friday).
Shetland area commander Chris Sewell said the woman’s next of kin have been informed, and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
Chief inspector Sewell said: “Around 1pm on Friday, 23 May, 2025, we were called to a report of a woman having fallen from a cliff near to St Ninian’s Isle, Shetland.
“Emergency services attended and a 70-year-old woman was pronounced dead. Her next of kin is aware.
“There are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.”
A number of emergency services attended the isle this afternoon, including coastguard, lifeboat, police and fire crews. Sewell said police were made aware of the incident at around 1pm.
Local councillor Alex Armitage said it was “desperately sad” news.
“It’s a shocking event, and everyone in Bigton is very sad to hear about it,” he said.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who has died.”
