Police / Man arrested after woman dies in west mainland

POLICE have confirmed that a man has been arrested following the death of a woman in the west mainland of Shetland earlier today (Sunday).

The man was arrested in connection with the incident and taken to hospital for treatment to injuries.

Officers are not looking for anyone else and enquiries remain ongoing.

The police said: “Around 4.55pm on Sunday, 11 February, officers were called to a report of a disturbance in the west of mainland Shetland. Emergency services attended and a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A man was arrested in connection with the incident and taken to hospital for treatment to injuries. Officers are not looking for anyone else and enquiries remain ongoing.”

Police, ambulance and the coastguard were all called to a location near the Melby Pier earlier on Sunday.

The area was cordoned off and police officers in white overalls could be seen searching the vicinity.

There had been reports that people in the Westside village were asked to stay indoors.
