Council / Convener pays tribute to ex-councillor Laura Baisley
TRIBUTES were paid in the council chamber this morning (Wednesday) to former elected member Laura Baisley, who passed away in October aged 77.
She represented the North Isles for five years after being elected in 2007.
Speaking at a meeting of the full council on Wednesday morning, SIC convener Andrea Manson said Baisley was a “valuable contributor and not afraid of active debate”.
The convener said Baisley moved to Shetland from Oxford, and ran the Fetlar shop and post office whilst crofting.
In the early 90s she launched Telecroft, which helped people to embrace the new digital technology.
Manson said Baisley took an active role in the various committees after being elected as a councillor for the North Isles.
The convener said after retiring from the SIC Baisley took on committee roles at local charities and organisations.
Manson passed on her sincere condolences to Baisley’s family.
