Letters / When islanders come together

Thank you to all the people in Shetland who took the time to respond to the recent consultation on Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs).

‘Sigh of relief’ as government makes u-turn on HPMA proposals

It is without doubt that the strong voice from communities played a huge part in the Scottish Government rethinking its plans to restrict fishing, aquaculture, and other human activity in 10 per cent of Scottish water.

It was the revolt from everyone, not just fishermen, that proved how effective we are when islanders come together.

As we await detail about the government’s “new pathway” to enhance marine protection, it is important that we as a community keep up the collective efforts to shape a long-term policy which works for Shetland.
