Marine / New Altaire moves to Danish shipyard ahead of delivery next year
PROGRESS on the new Altaire is going well ahead of her expected delivery to Shetland next year.
The pelagic trawler, which will be 80 metres in length, is currently being fitted out at the Karstensens shipyard in Skagen, Denmark.
Skipper Chris Duncan said it is looking like the boat will be delivered in May.
“She’s been ahead of schedule, from the shipyard in Poland that built the hull,” he said. “She’s actually a couple of weeks ahead of schedule, so it’s all looking on time.”
Duncan said the new boat came into the Skagen shipyard last week and is going to be worked on by up to 120 people.
He said the new vessel is “a lot more modern” than the current Altaire, which will be around two decades old by the time her replacement comes into service.
The Altaire is owned by a partnership that includes local shareholders as well as the Plymouth based fishing agents Interfish.
