SHETLAND is represented in the finals of year’s Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards, which celebrates the achievements of young people across the country.
The Chillax group from Scalloway Youth Centre is a finalist in the health and wellbeing category.
The group, all aged between 14 and 15, are dedicated to highlighting the importance of positive mental health and delivering workshops on coping strategies to schools and youth clubs.
The volunteer team presented their workshop to their MSP and local council leaders last year and have gone on to hold online sessions specifically tailored to the impact of Covid-19 on young people.
Brynn Hauxwell, meanwhile, is a finalist in the young hero category.
The 15-year-old, who lives in Yell, has recently completed a gruelling charity challenge by pushing his wheelchair for a total of 1,679 miles – equivalent to the length of Shetland’s coastline.
He has range of mobility issues as well as autism, ADHD, severe asthma and fixed ankle contractures, a condition of the joints or tendons which restricts movement
Brynn took eight months to complete the challenge and managed to raise over £8,000 for the charity Ability Shetland to thank it for the support it has given him and his family over the years.
This year’s Young Scot award winners will be announced during a live online ceremony on 22 April.
Young Scot chief executive Louise Macdonald said: “The inspiring achievements of Brynn and the team behind Chillax – Youth Action on Mental Health show how important young people are to Scotland and their incredible contribution to communities in Shetland.
“A huge congratulations to all of the 2021 finalists – we can’t wait to celebrate their achievements at the awards ceremony.”
