Sport / Inter-county victory for footballers

THERE were mixed fortunes for Shetland in the two inter-county sporting events at the weekend.

In the hockey Orkney beat the blues 1-0 at the Brae astroturf on Saturday afternoon.

In the football later on in the day, however, Shetland managed to triumph in a nail-biting game at Lerwick’s Gilbertson Park.

Shetland won 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in what was the 101st fixture of the Milne Cup.

Orkney were 1-0 up for most of the game until an own goal deep into injury time took the match to extra time and penalties.

In the sun and heat there were water breaks for the two teams, while Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon also watched on during her visit to the isles.

It was a case of sweet revenge for Shetland after they lost the fixture in Kirkwall 5-1 last year.
