News / Not the George McGhee hostel
THE NEW halls of residence, currently being built at the Lower Staney Hill in Lerwick, is not going to be named after the current hostel manager George McGhee who retires later this month after 25 years in the job.
Shetland Islands Council’s families committee felt it to be inappropriate naming the hostel after a member of staff, and opted instead to call the new 100-bed facility the Anderson High School Halls.
A consultation had thrown up massive support for naming it after the popular manager of the Janet Courtney Hostel.
In a report before the meeting on Monday morning, head of children services, Helen Budge, said that more than 50 per cent of 80 responses received had been in favour of naming the new hostel the George McGhee Halls of Residence.
The new hostel is part of the £56 million Anderson High School development, which is due to be opened in September next year.
