SHETLAND Coastguard has reminded killer whale watchers to keep safe when looking for orcas near the shore.

Locals and visitors alike have been enthralled in recent weeks by regular sightings of pods of orcas near land.

A Facebook group set up by Shetland Wildlife called Shetland Orca Sightings has allowed thousands to keep track of where they can see the animals in action, with flocks of people often rushing to the scene.

Shetland Coastguard has now reminded whale watchers to keep safe when out on the banks.

A local Coastguard representative wrote to the group: “I know we are all having a fantastic time looking around and getting some amazing chances to see and take photos of the orcas, but can I remind you all to please keep safe while you are on the coastline.

“We have some excellent staff in the islands that will help you if you become stuck or if anyone was to have an accident. Please remember call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Please don’t put yourself or anyone else in danger.”

The reminder came after Shetland Orca Sightings group founder Hugh Harrop warned whale watchers about where they leave their vehicles when heading towards the water to take photos and videos.

On Tuesday there were instances of public turning areas being obstructed and cars being blocked in.

Harrop also reminded orca enthusiasts to adhere to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, which requires people to leave gates how they find them.

There were reports of cattle getting loose from a farm in Quendale on Tuesday afternoon after a gate was left open.
