Letters / Change the policy!
THE intention by the SIC planning department to refuse permission for an Italian restaurant between Voe and Brae is completely illogical (Italian eatery a step too far for planners; SN, 23/11/15).
If the application is not in keeping with SIC policy, then the policy should surely be changed.
Are members of the planning committee aware that most of us living in the outlying areas like to go out for a meal on a regular basis? The policy makers really do need to get out more, and realise that the habit of eating out is not confined to Lerwick.
There is nowhere on Yell for example providing meals, and the island residents have to travel considerable distances, involving ferry crossings, if they want to enjoy a meal prepared for them.
Is it now the intention of the SIC planning department to picket all catering outlets and confirm that the potential diners have not travelled by car before allowing them to enter?
Or will that requirement be waived for town dwellers, and the policy of let-them-eat-cake apply to the rest of us, provided of course that we bake the cake ourselves?
The unsuccessful applicant should demand that a local public enquiry now be held. He will have no shortage of witnesses in favour of his imaginative initiative.
