News / Pair jailed for going on a stealing spree
TWO young men whose “adventure of stupidity” saw them go on a stealing spree around Lerwick have been sent to prison for a total of 15 months.
Grant Huntington, of 18 Sandside, Mossbank, admitted thieving items from Scott Direct in the town’s Gremista Industrial Estate on 28 September, as well as possessing a lock knife in Lerwick’s Ladies Drive on the same day.
The 27 year old also pleaded guilty to repeatedly spitting within a police vehicle, shouting swearing and making threats, also on Ladies Drive on the same day.
Nineteen year old Mark Rushby, of 5 Ladies Drive, Lerwick, admitted stealing items from DH Marine at the Marina Business Park in Lerwick on 28 September, as well as industrial goods from Jewson’s in Gremista. Both offences were committed while on bail.
At Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday, Huntington’s defence agent Tommy Allan said his client was “off the rails” at the time with drug use, while Rushby’s solicitor Liam McAllister said the pair, who were appearing from custody, had been on an “adventure of stupidity”.
However, there had been a “shift in attitude” in both men since they were remanded.
Rushby also admitted assaulting a man on Lerwick’s Ladies Drive on March 26 and repeatedly punching him on the head and body to his injury.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said he “went to the address to recover debt owed to him” – and when the money was not forthcoming, the attack was carried out.
Sheriff Mark Thorley gave Rushby a total of 10 months in prison and backdated the sentence to 29 October.
Thorley jailed Huntington for five months and backdated the sentence to 29 September.
