News / Flowers for Refugees
AN EVENT to remember the men, women and children who have lost their lives during the current refugees crisis will take place in Lerwick on Tuesday.
Organiser Wendy Sinclair asks those who want to lay Flowers for Refugees to come to the Westerloch footpath for a 4.30pm start.
The member of the local Shetland Supports Refugees group said Tuesday’s event ties in with the #1000b4Winter initiative.
“This action is to raise awareness that winter is coming. Last year children froze to death in the refugee camps.
“The group, Refugees Welcome, wants to make sure that at least 1,000 refugees are resettled before Christmas.
“That is why 1,000 people, with 1,000 letting agents, are gathering at Old Palace Yard – SW1P3JY (outside Parliament) at 6.30pm on 13 October to lay wreaths for children who died, and call on the government to move further and faster due to the urgency of the crisis.
“Shetland Supports Refugees has taken the decision to remember the lives of all the men, women and children who have lost their lives during their harsh crossings trying to get to safety.”
