A LERWICK man who smashed a glass over another man’s head leaving him permanently scarred has been landed with 300 hours of unpaid work.

Brian Costley, of 34 Bruce Crescent, attacked the man at Lerwick’s Harrison Square, Esplanade and Victoria Pier on 6 September last year, pursuing him before striking him on the head to his severe injury.

The 29 year old appeared at Lerwick Sheruiff Court for sentence on Wednesday, having previously pled guilty to assault.

The victim needed stitches and suffered lacerations to his face.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client maintained he himself had been attacked by the complainer on the same day, before seeing him carry out an “abhorrent assault” on a female, but admitted this was “no justification” for Costley’s crime.

Sheriff Philip Mann said that the use of the glass added an extra dimension to the assault.

“There is no doubt this is a very serious offence – any assault including a weapon has to be taken very seriously by the court,” he said.

Punched
A concrete finisher who repeatedly punched another man in the streets of Lerwick was fined £750 by the court on Wednesday.

Appearing from custody, 29 year old Craig Homer, of 50 Luss Avenue, Greenock, admitted repeatedly punching the man on the head and knocking him to the ground on Lerwick’s Commercial Street and Burns Walk on 1 August.

Defence agent Tommy Allan said Homer regretted the incident, which stemmed from a “stupid argument gone wrong”.

Very drunk
A night out with his Up Helly Aa Squad turned sour for Wayne Uren after he attacked a DJ in a Lerwick pub.

The 35 year old, of 52 North Lochside, Lerwick, admitted assaulting the man by repeatedly punching him on the head at the town’s Da Noost bar on 25 January.

The court heard that the DJ tried to keep Uren away from his equipment before the man, who was “very drunk”, lashed out.

Uren was fined £400 and told to give the complainer £150 compensation.
