News / Police issue knives warning
POLICE in Shetland are warning people not to carry any weapons when on a night out after a man and a woman were arrested in separate incidents over the weekend accused of being in possession of knives.
Both cases were continued without plea at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Tuesday and both accused were released on bail.
On Wednesday morning inspector Paul Daley said anyone carrying weapons of any kind would be dealt with “robustly”.
“As part of our duty of keeping people safe, officers will continue to liaise with local licenses premises to ensure they are supported in running safe establishments for people to enjoy a night out.
“In turn this helps keep our streets and communities safer and acts as a deterrent to incidents of violence and disorder that can often occur when alcohol and weapons are combined.
“We hope by issuing the strong message that weapons will not be tolerated in Shetland, it will encourage anyone with concerns regarding someone carrying a weapon to report it on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111,” he said.
