News / 2015 environmental awards
SHETLAND Amenity Trust is asking people to nominate projects and community initiatives for this year’s Environmental Awards.
The trust is calling on anyone who has been involved in local environmental projects, or who can think of others that are worthy of recognition, to submit an application.
This year’s awards, which pay tribute to projects promoting sustainability, conservation and enhancement of the isles’ environment, is the amenity trust’s 27th to date.
It has set an 11 September closing date for applications, whilst the awards will be presented at the Shetland Museum and Archives in Lerwick in November.
Projects suggested for nomination have to currently be operational, but they can also have been active for a number of years.
Areas of consideration include environmental improvement and awareness, recycling and waste management, the built environment, habitat creation and land stewardship, prevention of litter and pollution and heritage and culture.
Shetland Environment Group will judge the awards and its chairman Brian Gregson said that they “always look forward” to receiving applications.
“There may be established local projects, exciting community initiatives, innovative new ideas, individuals who have gone that extra mile or businesses striving to lower their environmental impact,” he said.
“We are always heartened to see so many different areas of our community willing to put time and effort into protecting and preserving our environment. We would encourage everyone who has undertaken relevant projects to apply.
“Many of the projects entered are nominated by members of the public. If you know of a project which deserves the recognition of an environmental award please request an application pack and put them forward.”
