SHETLAND College has named its two students of the year.

Barry Irvine, who has been on an HNC course in computing, is the college’s Higher Education Student of the Year.

Nominated by his tutor Euan Robertson, staff were particularly impressed with his high level of independent learning and skills.

They also highlighted how how he overcame medical conditions and demonstrated “a determination not to give up during what must have been difficult circumstances”.

Sean Boyle, who studies NC art & design, received the Further Education Student of the Year award.

His tutor Paul Bloomer described hims as “an exceptional student” who had overcome “significant barriers” to complete his course.

One of his paintings of a Lerwick landscape is currently hanging in the college café and social area.

Irvine said that he was “very honoured to be chosen” for his award, whilst Boyle commented that he was “overcome with gratitude.”

Irvine will now go forward alongside winners from UHI’s other colleges to be considered for the university’s overall Student of the Year award.
