News / The official end of Aegir
A MEMORANDUM of understanding to develop the potential for marine energy around Shetland has now officially been cancelled.
Representatives from Swedish utility Vattenfall were in Shetland last week to end the agreement.
The move follows the demise of Pelamis Wave Energy in November last year and the subsequent liquidation of Aegir Wave Power, the company that was to develop a large commercial wave power station off Shetland, in February.
The 10MW project six miles off Bigton was being developed in co-operation with Shetland Islands Council and Shetland Charitable Trust, which had made no financial investment in the business.
A Vattenfall spokesman said: “At a meeting of the three organisations last Thursday on Shetland, it was agreed that it was logical to end this agreement.
“Each organisation did agree to stay in touch whilst Vattenfall continues to monitor the marine renewables opportunities in Scotland and Shetland.”
