News / £2k Nepal fundraiser
NEARLY £2,500 has been raised for the Nepal earthquakes appeal by a Scalloway couple who have trekked in the country.
More than 9,000 people were killed when two recent quakes shocked the area, leaving many communities displaced.
A fundraising curry night was held at the Scalloway Hall on Saturday by local couple Beth and Ian Cummings, who visited the country in November.
It was a roaring success, with over £2,400 raised so far through money made on the night and donations.
“It was very busy – from start to finish there were lots of people,” Beth said. “Lots of families sat in, lots of people took away. Everyone in the community, from wholesalers, local shops, folk that came to support us, gave us stuff for raffles – everyone was just so generous.”
There was Nepalese chicken curry and dahl with lentils, squash, chickpeas and spinach on the menu, while there were options for children too.
“We’re sending the money directly to Nepal,” Cummings added.
“When we were trekking in November, the company we chose was a Nepalese company and they do a lot of charity work. They’ve been really active in the rescue effort.
“They’ve done a lot of rescuing of people from the villages, and distribution of food and shelter. The money that we’ve raised will go to them and shared between their projects.
“We feel very strongly that the money should go and help them to rebuild their shattered lives and homes.”
