Letters / He was never elected
Alistair Carmichael has no need to worry about lying to the electorate because he was never elected and he has no electorate.
However, if he does try to brazen it out, he can add electoral fraud to his already heavy burden of accusations.
These are the conclusions of The Sovereign Nation of Shetland, campaigning for Scotland and the UK to show how they derive their authority in Shetland.
In a number of court cases the only evidence produced by the Crown is a magazine article. All courts, including the UK Supreme Court have declined to hear evidence that Shetland is part of Scotland.
When presented with the evidence, neither the Returning Officer, nor the Acting Returning Officer denies that the election was void.
For the election to be valid, Shetland has to be part of Scotland. Only long-standing presumption and hearsay supports that idea.
The matter has never been tested in the courts and the judges go to extreme lengths to avoid such a politically sensitive issue.
Neither is this anything for the SNP to celebrate because they are in the same boat.
Nicola Sturgeon will have to be content with 56 out of 58 seats. Orkney and Shetland as a UK Parliamentary constituency is only a figment of the political imagination.
