News / Alderman fences for Scotland
LOCAL fencer Shaun Alderman has become the first Shetlander to be selected to fence for Scotland at the junior Commonwealth fencing championships, which will be held in Cape Town this July.
The 18 year old from Vidlin said he was excited to join the 30-strong Scottish team. He will fence in the foil events.
His father Andy, who coaches in Edinburgh, said Shaun was following in the footsteps of local team mates who have competed at the senior Commonwealth events in previous years.
Shaun will be moving to Edinburgh later this summer to study at the Academy for Music and Sound after completing an HNC music course at Mareel.
He said: “Being selected to compete for your country is a big honour. I am really looking forward to go out fence for Scotland; particularly going to South Africa is pretty amazing.”
