A RESOURCE centre to better support those affected by dementia, their carers and families, was opened in Lerwick on Friday.

The Shetland Dementia Resource Centre at 66 Burgh Road will serve as a drop-in for anyone seeking information about an illness that is affecting an increasing number of islanders.

Local dementia adviser Ann Williamson said more than 400 people in Shetland suffered from the condition, which as yet has no cure.

“The centre will make us more visible and it also means that we are more accessible as members of the public can just drop in for information on dementia,” she said.

“We will be able to do more training from here, host social activities and provide better help for carers and their families.”

The new office was officially opened by local MSP Tavish Scott at midday.

He said: “Dementia affects many people and families across Shetland. It affects everyday life and is a great challenge to both those people affected and loved ones.

“The new resource centre is a welcome and necessary service and I thank all those who have made this possible.

“I am sure that many islanders will use the advice and help they can now access in Burgh Road.”

The premises were purchased and refurbished by the national organisation Alzheimer Scotland. The local branch contributed fundraising.

Alzheimer Scotland chief executive Henry Simmons said he was delighted to be in the isles to witness the opening of the organisation’s latest resource centre.

“Shetland has shown itself to be an engaged and understanding community for people living with dementia; our new centre will be a community hub for much of this activity and support the great work happening locally.”

Alzheimer Scotland operates services at over 60 sites throughout Scotland and provides practical services such as home support, befriending and carers’ support.

The local office can be contacted by phoning (01595) 720343.
