News / Journeys beyond the imaginable

SHETLAND Arts is to host the concert part of the world premiere of Kai Fisher’s new production Last Dream (On Earth) on Wednesday evening at Mareel.

The production opened in Glasgow earlier this month before going on tour to St Andrews and Paisley en route to Shetland.

‘Last Dream (On Earth)’ interweaves a driving live music score with accounts of those who risk their lives for a distant dream.

It draws on extensive interviews and historic documents to explore journeys beyond the imaginable, and quests to find a better future in faraway places.

The performance entwines the stories of pioneering cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin with the stories of African emigrants on their journey to Europe, and poses the question ‘when does an emigrant become a refugee?’

The production includes a live soundtrack with collaborations from sound designer Matt Padden, as well as musicians Gameli Tordzro from Ghana and Tyler Collins from Alaska, and performers Ryan Gerald, Mercy Ojelade and Adura Onashile.

The production team said that audiences could expect an experience unlike any they have ever had before.

Upon entering, they will be handed a pair of headphones, through which they will hear the performance as it unfolds on-stage in front of their eyes.

Fischer, who  fled East Germany via the Hungarian/Austrian border in 1989, works as a theatre designer and theatre maker in Glasgow.

He said the theme of impossible journeys and the plight of migrants was one that had struck a chord with many audiences, particularly given the current political climate.

“For me, ‘Last Dream (On Earth)’ is not about outer space, or North Africa or Spain, or Finland even… or the moon.

“For me, it is about the spaces in between. It is about the frontiers. It is about what we are prepared to do to reach the unknown and why.”

  • Tickets cost £14.00 / £8.00 and are available via Shetland Box Office in Mareel and Islesburgh, over the phone on 01595 745 555, or online at www.shetlandboxoffice.org
