News / Fetlar kids’ charity cycle

Joshua Painter and Kieran Brown at the Banks of Funzie after cycling 7.5 miles for the Water Aid charity.

TWO PUPILS from the North Isles have raised funds for the WaterAid charity by completing a sponsored bike ride across Fetlar.

Ten year old Joshua Painter, who goes to Fetlar Primary School, and his friend Kieran Brown who attends school in Baltasound, rode 7.5 miles from the ferry terminal at Hamars Ness to the Banks of Funzie.

Fetlar pupils have been studying water and its uses around the world as part of working towards a level one “rights respecting school” award.

WaterAid provides clean, fresh drinking water to communities reliant on dirty water, and also provides access to drainage and sewage.

All five Fetlar pupils raised money by baking for a school event, but Joshua decided to raise something extra through a sponsored cycle.

His original target of £100 was exceeded, with the total now looking likely to be more than £250, and the two boys have now raised over £33 per mile between them.

Joshua and Kieran both want to thank everyone who showed their support whether by donating or turning out to cheer them on.
