Letters / Divest from fossil fuels
The more I read about climate change, the more worried I become about the future for my children and grand children.
I have been reading about Global Divestment Day, which is happening this weekend, and it has made me think about Shetland and all the money it has invested in the stock exchange.
A lot of that money has no doubt been invested in the fossil fuel industry, which is one of the main causes of climate change.
I think the SIC and Shetland Charitable Trust should think seriously about divesting from fossil fuels and set an example by playing their part in making sure that future generations can continue living on this planet.
From a financial point of view it sounds like fossil fuels are a bad investment anyway, because most of them are going to have to be left in the ground if we want to avoid disaster on a global scale.
I know that Shetland has made all its money as a result of the oil industry at Sullom Voe, but could it not follow the example of Norway, which is gradually pulling its investments out of fossil fuels?
