News / McCullin exhibition

A GROUP of young local artists and musicians are to get the chance to show off their creative talents as part of a scheme connected to famed war photojournalist Don McCullin’s upcoming exhibition in the isles.

McCullin’s iconic images of conflict and social breakdown will be showcased at the Shetland Museum and Bonhoga Gallery, with the exhibition ‘Fallen’ beginning on 29 November and running until 22 February.

Over the next three months a group of young ambassadors will taken part in a “ground-breaking” scheme related to the ARTIST ROOMS On Tour programme, designed to enable modern and contemporary art to reach audiences throughout the UK.

The young ambassadors have called themselves ‘Northern Lights’ and are working on the scheme in association with Shetland Arts and Shetland Museum and Archives.

They will be split into three groups – photojournalists, filmmakers and singer-songwriters – and McCullin’s exhibition will act as a “permanent legacy” for the project.

Jane Matthews, who is managing the youth ambassador scheme for Shetland Arts, said it was “an incredible opportunity for our 17 young ambassadors to gain professional experience and create new work with our three local experts on the project”.

The photojournalists, assisted by local photojournalist Calum Toogood, will be working as a team to highlight contemporary issues of Shetland life, experiencing life in photojournalism and producing work to be showcased at the exhibition’s opening.

Led by experienced broadcast journalist Liz Musser, the filmmakers will use McCullin’s life and career as a platform for their own short film, to be screened throughout Shetland and online.

The singer songwriters, helped by Lewie Peterson of The Revellers, will work on original music exploring Shetland as home, and what this means to different people.

The scheme is funded jointly through the ARTIST ROOMS Touring Group by The Art Fund and Creative Scotland.
