News / Refusenik banned

A SHETLAND student studying in Edinburgh was banned from driving and fined after appearing in custody at Lerwick Sheriff Court on Monday.

Joseph Fraser, of New House, Tresta, spent the weekend in the cells at Lerwick police station after he refused to be breathalysed.

The twenty year old had been arrested after police officers found him sitting in a parked van on the main A970 road at Tingwall on Saturday.

The court heard that Fraser had failed a roadside screening test but when he was taken to the police station he twice refused to provide a sample.

Sheriff Philip Mann fined him £500 and disqualified him from driving for 14 months, which can be reduced by three months if he completes an alcohol awareness course.
