SHETLAND swimmer Amy Harper has joined 15 other young athletes to become a sporting ambassador for young people in Scotland.
The 20 year old from Gulberwick, who won gold, silver and bronze medals at last year’s Island Games, was picked from 180 candidates for a place on national sport agency sportscotland’s Young People’s Sports Panel.
Harper is currently working at Lerwick’s Clickimin Leisure Complex during a year out from her studies, which have seen her complete an HND in sports coaching at Edinburgh’s Telford College. Next year she is planning to complete a one year degree in sports science.
The only panel member from the Scottish islands, she said she has already started work on her first task as a sporting ambassador, to make a video promoting the Olympics to young people, in which she is interviewing members of the local gymnastics, athletics and swimming clubs on the impact of the Games.
She plans to stay in Shetland and hopes to find work in the sporting field, such as the active schools team.
“The prospect of competing for only a handful of places with other young people from all over Scotland was at first quite daunting but when the interview tasks got underway I became more confident in the group and individual tasks,” she said.
“It showed me that young Shetlanders should never be overawed when getting involved with mainland projects – we have clearly got a lot to offer Scottish sport.”
Shetland Islands Council’s active schools co-ordinator Louise Jamieson said her team were looking forward to supporting Harper in her new role.
The sport panel, which also involves the Young Scot charity, hopes to help influence and shape the future of sport in Scotland.
