20mph speed limits proposed for Mossbank and Firth
NEW 20mph speed limits could be introduced throughout Mossbank and Firth under proposals being put forward by Shetland Islands Council.
The reduced limits could be enforced on residential roads including Sandside, Midlea and Leaside, the SIC has said.
Maidenfield, Hamarsgarth, Rayburn Road, Smuggabank and Burraness would also be reduced to 20mph under the plans.
Shetland Islands Council announced the proposals in a notice to Mossbank Public Hall, which will host a consultation on the changes next week.
Folk will get to see the plans and give their views on them at Mossbank hall between 4-8pm on Tuesday 11 August.
Residents, road users, interested parties and the general public are invited to attend and discuss the proposals.
The SIC has rolled 20mph speed limits across parts of Shetland over the past few years, including throughout Lerwick and Scalloway.
Plans were announced last month to reduce the speed limit through Cunningsburgh from 50mph to 40mph, which were welcomed by Shetland South councillor Alex Armitage and the local community council.
Shetland South councillor Alex Armitage said “it doesn’t seem right that 50mph traffic is permitted so close to pedestrians, without any kind of barrier or distancing”.
He said dropping the speed to 40mph, with automatic vehicle activated signs deployed to remind drivers of the limit, would result in a “significant reduction in road danger in Cunningsburgh”.
