THE SPEED limit on Lerwick’s King Harald Street is set reduce from 30mph to 20mph in early November.

A traffic regulation order notice confirms that the speed limit on the road, and some of its surrounding areas, will change on 2 November.

Changes to some speed limits in Voe and Brae will also come into effect on that date.

In Voe, the plan is to maintain the 30mph limit which runs from the junction with the A970 past the hall, but to introduce a 40mph stretch beyond this.

Currently the speed limit there goes from 30mph to 60mph.

For Brae the limit is set to drop from 40mph to 30mph on the road approaching the south entrance to the village.

All changes previously went out to consultation.

Consultation has also recently taken place on proposed 20mph zones in Mossbank, Firth and Hoswick.

While more 20mph limits are being introduced to Lerwick, such as on King Harald Street, the council decided against bringing in more traffic calming measures – including humps and zebra crossings – following a series of complaints.

Shetland Islands Council is the process of reducing the speed limit of vehicles to 20mph on the majority of residential and local access roads.

The Scottish Government has committed to working with local authorities to reduce the speed limits in towns, cities and villages to improve safety for all road users.
