Alistair Carmichael talks tunnels, working with Hannah Mary and career in politics
Sheeks Aboot Shetland – Episode 15
VETERAN MP Alistair Carmichael has seen many prime ministers come and go, and he is preparing for another one in Westminster.
Carmichael is celebrating his 25th year in Parliament, making him “one winter flu epidemic away from being Father of the House”.
He thinks Andy Burnham’s catchy idea of a No 10 of the North is a good one, pulling power out of Whitehall and spreading it around the country, but suggests it’s a bit “performative” and unlikely to outlast his reign as PM.
And locally he is looking forward to working with the new SNP MSP Hannah Mary Goodlad, saying it is in Shetland’s best interests for the pair to find common ground.
It’s a new world for the LibDems with Shetland’s Westminster and Holyrood representatives no longer sharing an office in town.
Finally, in a week dominated by talk about tunnels, Carmichael speaks about his delight in seeing the project taking a leap forward.
