Energy / Serica and px Group to run Shetland Gas Plant in new partnership

Shetland Gas Plant.

THE SHETLAND Gas Plant is set to be taken over by the px Group, who will form a new partnership with Serica Energy.

Serica Energy took over the running of the gas plant just last year, also acquiring a 40 per cent stake in the Greater Laggan area gas fields to the West of Shetland.

It was announced in 2024 that TotalEnergies was set to sell the Shetland Gas Plant, and its stake in the Greater Laggan Area, to Prax.

But that deal was never concluded because Prax Group’s parent company State Oil went into administration in 2025.

Serica then clinched a deal to buy Prax Upstream Limited, with the acquisition including the agreements Prax had in place with Total.

In an announcement today (Wednesday), px Group said it would take over operations of both the gas plant and the associated West of Shetland infrastructure.

The Shetland Gas Plant is a critical part of the Greater Laggan Area energy system, processing offshore gas and transporting it to the UK mainland via the SIRGE and FUKA pipelines.

Under the transition, px will operate the full infrastructure chain – from subsea pipelines through to the UK National Grid.

The agreement also transfers 45 workers to px Group, which it said would ensure “continued safe and reliable operations at the site”.

“This infrastructure plays a key role in UK energy security and has significant potential to support future developments in the West of Shetland basin,” px Group said in a statement.

“We look forward to working closely with Serica Energy to maximise the value of this important energy hub.”

Construction started on the Shetland Gas Plant in 2010 and six years later it began taking in gas from fields north west of the isles by pipeline.

The facility processes the gas and then sends it off again through a 230km pipeline which helps to take the export to the St Fergus Gas Terminal in Aberdeenshire.
