Sport / Sporting round-up 23 March
SHETLAND’s netballers will welcome inter-county rivals Orkney to Clickimin for their annual clash this Saturday.
First centre pass in the A game is at 12 noon on Saturday, followed by the B match at 2.30pm.
The blues will look to earn double county success in front of what is sure to be a raucous home crowd in Lerwick.
The A team will be looking to avenge their defeat to Orkney in Kirkwall last year, while the B team are aiming to retain the title they won 12 months ago.
SHETLAND’s under-17 netballers were in Aberdeen this past weekend in the second round of their district competition.
The squad performed well in round one to secure a place in section A, which includes the top teams in Scotland.
They took on Central on Saturday but unfortunately couldn’t play their last fixture against Perth and Kinross on Sunday due to travel issues.
Central secured a 37-27 win overall, but Shetland produced a strong display and gave a good account of themselves.
It was goal for goal throughout the first quarter before Shetland clawed ahead at the start of the second quarter.
Central pushed forward with great defensive pressure to force errors, gaining a lead through the second and third quarters.
Despite Shetland winning the last quarter, Central’s strong lead saw them win the match.

Danielle Witt was named player of the match by Central, while players’ players of the match were Evie Henderson and Bonnie Li and coaches’ players of the match were Roma Robertson, Ava Anderson and Li.
Coaches Natalie Constable and Lianne Jamieson said they were very proud of their squad, and said the result proved that Shetland deserved their place as one of the top eight teams in Scotland.
They thanked Ashley Symington for co-coaching the match, NorthLink Ferries for their continued sponsorship and Kevin Jones for dropping by and taking action shots.
HOLDERS Whitedale are already through to the semi-finals of the Highland Fuels Cup ahead of their final group game against Scalloway tonight.
Whitedale top the group with two wins from two, with Scalloway needing to avoid a thrashing to join them in the last four at Thistle’s expense.
It is the second meeting of the sides in four days, after a last-gasp winner on Friday night earned Whitedale a 4-3 win.
In group B Spurs are out after two defeats, but Ness, Celtic and Whalsay are still vying for the two semi-final places.
Whalsay host Ness at 8.15pm on Wednesday at North Loch Park, while Spurs meet town rivals Celtic at 6pm on Friday.
Meanwhile there were 30 goals across the four quarter-finals as the Championship league cup took over the new 3G pitch on Saturday and Sunday.
Ness C saw off Wastside Rebels 6-1 before holders Bressay Sharks beat newcomers Rusty Spoons 10-0 on Saturday.
A day later Championship winners North Isles beat Banks 5-0, before Delting B easily overcame Southside Impact 8-0.
The semi-finals will see Ness C meet North Isles, and Bressay face Delting B, both on Saturday night.
A HOME fixture on the new North Loch Park pitch was not enough to help the men’s Shetland rugby team to victory on Saturday.
The side welcomed Aberdeenshire to Lerwick at the weekend, with Aberdeenshire running out 54-14 victors in the end.
Next up for the men’s side is another home tie, this time against third placed Caithness.
