Marine / Lecture to be held in memory of Dr Ian Napier
THE FIRST Dr Ian Napier memorial lecture is set to take place in Scalloway at the end of the month.
Hosted by UHI Shetland, the Centre for Sustainable Seafood and Shetland Fishermen’s Association, the event will take place at the UHI’s Scalloway campus on 26 March at 7pm.
The event honours the life and work of the late Dr Ian Napier, whose “research and dedication made a profound impact on fisheries science and Shetland’s fishing industry”.
The inaugural lecture, entitled Between Individual Autonomy and Collective Good: Roots of Social Justice in the Shetland Fishing Community, will be delivered by Dr Demet Şahende Dinler.
She is assistant professor of anthropology and international development at the School of Global Studies, University of Sussex.
She will examine global pressures facing fisheries, such as consolidation of vessel ownership, quota concentration, and the rising cost of entry for young people, and contrast these trends with the Shetland experience.
Dr Dinler said Dr Napier was a “generous, inspiring and exemplary researcher for future generations interested in collaborative research with fishermen”.
Dr Beth Mouat from the UHI Centre for Sustainable Seafood added that he was not only a “deeply respected researcher but also a generous colleague whose work continues to influence policy, practice, and our understanding of the fishing industry”.
Brian Isbister from the Shetland Fish Producers’ Organisation said Dr Napier was also a “stalwart supporter” of the Shetland fishing industry, with his ensuring that Shetland’s voice was heard in national and international discussions.
