THE UNDER-13 table tennis top 12 was played at the weekend, with Brae providing five players and the south end having three.

Top seed Dylan Ritch topped group A with five straight set wins, while Terry Peterson joined him in the last four.

Ayanda Armitage secured top spot in group B with five wins, but there was a three-way battle between Eve Johnson, Ryan Peterson and Ava Swift all for second place.

Once the numbers had been crunched, it was Johnson who took second place to progress on countback, with Peterson third and Swift in fourth.

Johnson continued her strong form from the group phase by winning a very close first semi-final set against Ritch 17-15.

Ritch had to up his game and this he did to take the next three sets, but this did not detract from what had probably been Johnson’s best competitive showing.

The second semi-final between Armitage and Peterson was over in three sets, but this did not reflect the competitiveness of the match.

Armitage took the first set fairly comfortably 11-6, but after that it was very even. Further scores of 12-10 and 11-9 took Armitage into the final, where his fellow Bigton-ite was waiting.

In the final Ritch came flying out of the blocks to take the first set 11-3.

The next two sets were closer, but Ritch took them 11-8, 11-8 to successfully defend his title.

This left matches for final positions, which always produces competitive matches. Johnson took third after a ding-dong battle with Peterson, making her top placed girl on the day.

Li took fifth place, with Peterson sixth, Ava Swift seventh and Hanna Sneider eighth.

The all-Brae affair between Sonny Flaws and Giovanni Carlaccini for ninth and tenth spots saw Carlaccini reverse his recent fortunes against Flaws, beating him in four sets.

Spencer Flaws took 11th place, against Isaac Williamson in three sets.

Tournament organiser and association chairman Greg Burgess thanked the players and helpers for contributing to another successful event and the Dragon House for sponsoring the event.

THE SHETLAND men’s rugby team’s home match against Ross Sutherland this weekend was postponed due to there being insufficient players for the away side.

Ross Sutherland had been due to make the journey north for the fixture, but it has now been pushed back to 18 April.

They have also been docked four points as a result.

SPENCER Moreland played the full match as his Brechin City side were turfed out of the Highland League Cup semi-finals by Turriff United on penalties.

Brechin lead during the tie on Saturday, but a late leveller from Turriff saw the game head to a shootout where Turriff prevailed 4-3.

TWO VOLLEYBALL teams from Glasgow made their way north to face the Shetland ladies in a home double header this weekend.

The first match against Glasgow Outdoor Volleyball Club proved to be a closely contested encounter, with both sides producing some excellent rallies.

However, a strong run of serves from the Glasgow side saw them edge ahead to take the first set 25–18.

Shetland settled well in the second set. Powerful hits from Paula Williamson and Keira Tulloch applied pressure, and with improved consistency across the court, the home side claimed the set 25–17.

With the match finely balanced, both teams pushed hard in the third and fourth sets.

Glasgow’s effective cross-court hitting began to find gaps in the Shetland defence, and the visitors secured the final two sets 25–19 and 25–15.

The second game of the day was against Glasgow International 2 and saw Ellie Nicholson came on at libero, while Aimee Strachan took up the opposite position.

Strong serving and solid net play kept Shetland within reach, but they narrowly lost the first set 25–20.

Consistent serving from the more experienced Glasgow side, saw the visitors extend their lead and take the second set 25–15.

In the final set, Shetland continued to show good determination and scrambling defence, but signs of tiredness began to appear.

Glasgow International 2 maintained their momentum to close out the match 25–11.

Despite the results, there were many positive passages of play for Shetland to build on as they look ahead to their remaining fixtures.
