Energy / A chance to share your view on green energy projects

WITH a number of large and controversial green energy projects in the pipeline for Shetland, locals will have a chance to share their views with a team of researchers next month.

A team from the universities of Bath, Cardiff and Strathclyde are returning to the isles to continue their research into the perceptions on hydrogen and future offshore energy projects.

The academics are hosting two workshops at the end of March and are now seeking to recruit participants.

Similar workshops were held in spring and summer last year.

The research forms part of the EPSRC-funded project Ocean-REFuel (Ocean Renewable Energy Fuels), which explores the potential for offshore wind and marine renewable energy to produce zero-carbon hydrogen and ammonia fuels.

Project co-ordinator Usman Siddiqi said: “Our work in Shetland centres on understanding Shetlanders’ visions for the future of their communities in the context of the energy transition, including expectations around community benefits, local value creation, and equitable compensation for hosting renewable and hydrogen-related developments.”

He added that the team was keen to hear a wide range of perspectives.

“We do not expect participants to have any technical knowledge, only a willingness to share their views on Shetland’s energy future,” he said.

“We want to listen to Shetlanders about what matters to them and their communities, and what they expect from future energy projects.

“What participants share will help shape discussions about how the energy transition can be fair and deliver real benefits for Shetland and for other communities hosting energy developments across the country.”

The two workshops will take place at the Islesburgh Community Centre on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 March from 1pm to 5.30pm.

Each workshop will have around 15 participants, and an honorarium of £60 will be paid.
