Also in the news / Americana gig, Carmichael on Venezuela and more…
A FOLK and Americana band from Nebraska are heading to Shetland soon to play their first UK gig.
The Wildwoods will play Mareel in Lerwick on Sunday (11 January) in an event hosted by Ragged Wood and Shetland Arts.
The group – who will also be performing at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections – are said to be a “trio rooted in rich harmonies and heartfelt storytelling, influenced by artists like Nickel Creek, Watchhouse and Gillian Welch & David Rawlings.”.
Tickets are available online or from Mareel.
NORTH ISLES MP Alistair Carmichael has said there are “echoes” of the Iraq War in the USA’s intervention in Venezuela.
Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were seized from their Caracas compound on Saturday and flown to the US as part of a special forces operation.
Carmichael said the last time he saw the same level of agreement between the government and its opposition in relation to foreign policy was in the lead-up to the war in Iraq, adding “we all know how that ended”.
In relation to a question from Carmichael, foreign secretary Yvette Cooper said the UK Government had discussed with their US counterparts “the importance of a democratic transition”.
Carmichael said that while few would “mourn the fall” of Maduro in Venezuela, the UK Government needed to be a “voice for restraint” and “respect” for international law.
“If we are to learn the lessons of Iraq and see a better outcome from this intervention then it surely starts from reinforcing the right of the Venezuelan people to determine their own government – rather than Donald Trump.”
COUNCIL staff will attempt collections of household waste and recycling in the coming days, following missed collections during the recent wintry weather.
Attempts will be made tomorrow (Wednesday) to collect non-recyclable waste – black bags – in Lerwick that were unable to be collected last weekend. Cardboard and paper recycling collections will also be made in Lerwick this week, on the normal days for collection.
