Sport / Robesten could make FA Cup bow for new club under TV lights

George Robesten (right) made his first Premiership start for Ross County against Hibs last season.

A FOOTBALLER from Shetland could be set to play a part in the FA Cup third round under the TV lights this weekend.

George Robesten, who formerly played for Scalloway, has joined English club Weston-super-Mare FC on a permanent six-month deal after departing Ross County.

Robesten made 16 appearances for the Staggies – including in the Scottish Premiership against teams like Rangers, Hibs and Hearts – after joining the club on an initial two-year apprenticeship in 2022.

The 20-year-old had also spent time out on loan at Highland League clubs including Nairn, Brora Rangers and most recently Strathspey Thistle.

He will now move south to join the club currently sitting second in England’s National League South, just a point behind leaders Worthing.

And Robesten could make his debut for Weston-super-Mare in one of the biggest games in their history this weekend.

The Seagulls travel to League Two’s Grimsby Town – who knocked Manchester United out of the League Cup earlier this season – for a third round tie in the FA Cup.

TNT Sports are set to show the game live at 5.45pm on Saturday night.

It marks the first time that Weston-super-Mare have made it to the third round of England’s oldest football cup competition.

Weston came through three qualifying rounds just to make it into the FA Cup proper, with Saturday’s fixture their sixth game in the competition already.

Robesten will now look to help them make even more history and the chance to face the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester City in the next round.

Weston assistant manager Gary Warren coached Robesten in the Ross County academy, and told Weston’s club website he would be a valuable addition.

“George is a real quick, pacey, powerful winger,” he said.

“He’s a really, really good kid and someone that I’ve obviously worked with before so he’s someone that I know a little bit about.

“He comes down to England to really give his career a start since having a good spell in Scotland. He’ll come full of energy, full of brightness and he’s a good character who you want on your side, he’ll work hard.

“For him, it’ll give George a platform to try and kick his career on and play in an environment that is suited to him.”
