Transport / Social media video of boat in rough seas AI generated, NorthLink confirms

NORTHLINK has confirmed a video doing the rounds on social media apparently showing one of its passenger ferries bobbing in stormy seas is AI generated.

The video was posted by a Facebook page with 71,000 followers which claims to be about the Shetland crime drama TV show and Shetland the place itself.

It was captioned with ‘how do you feel about that’ and showed the NorthLink boat heading through rough seas.

The ferry enduring some choppy waters is nothing new – but some folk were quick to realise that the boat shown in the video, which has been shared 2,500 times, does not have a bow like the real ships do.

A spokesperson for NorthLink has now confirmed the video is AI (artificial intelligence) generated, adding that it does not show the bulbous bow or bow thrust openings/markings.

It does not end there for Shetland-related AI videos on the Facebook page, however.

There is also one which shows a naval submarine breaching the water right next to Victoria Pier which is captioned: “Lerwick’s protection is fundamental.”

The aerial shot in this video also shows there no Market Cross – or anything at all on the south end of the street.

It comes amid increasing concern over the growing role AI generation is having not only in images and video but in various walks of life.

Earlier this year Shetland News reported on a tourism book about Shetland which appeared to be written with the help of AI.

Among the advice in the travel book was that Lerwick has a PC World, a Tesco petrol station and a multi-storey car park – all of which are false.
