Business / Shetland News up for four prizes at Highlands and Islands media awards
SHETLAND will be well represented at the 2026 Highlands and Islands media awards – with Shetland News scooping four nominations in total.
Shetland News is pleased to say that it is again nominated for the website of the year prize.
Among the submissions were coverage of the 2025 Island Games and Lerwick’s Up Helly Aa.
Journalist Ryan Nicolson has been nominated for the reporter for the year prize for pieces which included stories on parents’ concern over ASN plans at the Aith school and anger over cruise ship passengers coming ashore after illness on board.
He also submitted a story about a local group’s frustration over a Channel 4 knitting programme.
Nicolson is also nominated in the feature category for in-depth pieces on Fair Isle, Lea Gardens and comedian Marjolein Robertson.
His colleague Chris Cope is up for the environment and sustainability reporter of the year.
His submission featured stories about plans being shelved for an electric boat trial in Papa Stour, an in-depth look at the Brae rural energy hub and the impact of marine litter on wildlife.
Meanwhile the Shetland Times is shortlisted for the newspaper of the year category.
The paper’s Daniel Shailer has a hat-trick of nominations in the business reporter, feature and young reporter categories.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Inverness on 6 February.
