Letters / Rosebank should go ahead
I recently came across an article which outlined multiple local activist groups’ opposition to the Rosebank oil field.
While examining this piece I could not help but see the immense passion and commitment these individuals have regarding the topic. I have always believed that if one is able to carry a belief with strong conviction it should be commended, even if we may occasionally disagree.
Isles groups urge prime minister to refuse Rosebank development
This is one of these cases, where I respect the determination these individuals have but I do not support their cause.
They claim that the Rosebank field would release high levels of CO2, which is correct however would be nothing compared to the levels released if we were to be forced to import oil and gas from abroad.
Of course, they also point out that most oil and gas would be destined for out with the UK, this is also correct however could be rectified.
The current reason as to why most of the Rosebank oil and gas is destined to outside the UK is because of our limited refining capabilities. The abolishment of the windfall tax would encourage investment domestically, expanding our refining capabilities which in turn would create jobs and lead to lower prices for consumers.
It is for these reasons outlined that I am of the belief that the Rosebank field should go ahead.
