A total of 42 runners took on the 6,600m course through Shetland Golf Club and even braved the infamous burn despite the wintry weather too.

Neil Arthur was the overall winner, crossing the finish line in 26 minutes, 22 seconds. Ronan Bourke was second (27:25), with Matthew Cox narrowly behind in 27:41.

Manouk Wilkinson was the winner of the women’s race in 30:41, just ahead of Christie Ford (30:47), with Lynsey Henderson third in 33:20.

There was also a strong turnout of young runners for the junior races, ranging from under-nines up to under-20s.

The youngest groups ran a 1,500m course, with Sarah Cox first across the line for under-11 girls and Aidan Jamieson winning the boys’ race for the same age group.

SHETLAND’S women’s volleyball team continued their impressive start to their maiden league season with a 3-0 win on the road against Perth.

The blues found their flow with a brilliant pick-up from Paula Williamson setting up Keira Tulloch to cleverly tip it over the net into empty space.

With Fiona Shearer controlling the back court Shetland pulled ahead and claimed the first set 25–18.

The second set started slowly, with both teams once again trading points and making a few simple errors, including serving into the net.

With Alice Parkinson serving confidently and the team picking up every ball that crossed the net, Shetland began to build a comfortable lead.

A fantastic save in the back court by Tulloch kept the pressure on Perth, and Shetland secured the set with a strong 25–20 win.

Shetland came out firing in the third set, with impressive pick-ups and controlled play from Williamson and Ludo Zolfo.

The team hit their stride, communicating well and moving with confidence.

With solid strength at the net and disciplined defence in the back court, Shetland kept the ball high and in play.

Williamson continued to dominate as an outside hitter, smashing point after point past Perth’s defence as Shetland powered through to win the set 25–15.

The men’s side were at home on Saturday, losing out 3-2 to Edinburgh’s Nuvoc in a narrow defeat.

Shetland won the first set 25-22 in Aith, before Nuvoc took the next two sets 25-21, 25-18 to take the lead before the blues levelled it up by winning the fourth set 27-25.

It came down to a decider, which Nuvoc won 15-10 to seal victory.

SHETLAND Indoor Bowling Club recently held its first open competition of the year – the open triples competition.

A good turnout of players took part, and it was great to see a busy afternoon of exciting bowls action.

The open triples winners, from left: Rosie Jamieson, Colin Bain and Lynne Arcus.

The format involved all teams playing each other in their group, with the winners of the two groups going straight into a final.

The winners of group A were Willie Coutts, Nui Coutts, and Pauline Christey, while the winners of group B were Colin Bain, Rosie Jamieson and Lynne Arcus.

The final was a close encounter, with lots of excellent shots from all players. It was played over seven ends, with Bain, Jamieson and Arcus coming out on top 8-4.

New members are always welcome to come along and try bowls at Shetland Indoor Bowling Club.

The club plays on Tuesday evenings from 7pm-9pm and Saturday afternoons from 2pm-4pm, September to April.

FOOTBALLER Spencer Moreland and his Brechin City side exited the Scottish Cup in the third round on Saturday.

Moreland was part of the Brechin side who earned a glamour tie at home to Hearts last season, but there was to be no repeat after defeat at the weekend.

It was another Hearts, Kelty Hearts, who ended their cup run with a 2-0 win, with Moreland an 80th minute substitute in the match.

Lewis Harkness and keeper Henry Oldbury started for Golspie Sutherland at the weekend, but were unable to prevent a 4-1 win for Halkirk in the North Caledonian league.
