Letters / What is the correct term for ‘Shetland language’?
I have been looking at words coined from time to time to replace the terms ‘Shetland dialect’, or ‘Shetland language’.
In 2004 John Magnus Tait proposed “Shaetlan”, and we have seen that word take off recently.
On the same occasion Laureen Johnson plumped for “Shetlan”, and Robert Alan Jamieson “Sjetlin”.
I now see that the Shetland Stitch Club is going for “Shetlean” (today’s Shetland Times).
My question is: are such coinages necessary at all?
