Community / Dedicated lifeboat volunteers celebrated by RNLI
TWO DEDICATED lifeboat volunteers have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to the RNLI.
Peter Kerr and John Angus were surprised with their Excellence in Volunteering awards at the Lerwick lifeboat station on Tuesday night.
Kerr has been a crew member for 11 years and is a qualified lifeboat navigator, assisting the coxswain with plotting courses and search patterns in all weather conditions, daylight and darkness.
As well as his crew member role, Kerr regularly assists individuals and schools visiting the Lerwick lifeboat station to learn more about the RNLI’s work, and also helps fundraise for the charity.
Volunteer Angus has been recognised for his contribution to RNLI as one of the station’s launch authorities – a vital role to approve the launch of the lifeboat when requested by HM Coastguard, liaising with the coxswain and paging the lifeboat crew.
He also assists with lifeboat launches, whether for training or incidents, and oftenattends when the lifeboat returns to help with berthing and refuelling.
Angus also helps with the organisation of fundraising events and helps to spread the charity’s key messages.
Both were unaware they were to be the focus of the evening on Tuesday night, before receiving their certificates from RNLI Scotland head Jill Hepburn.
RNLI Lerwick branch chairman John Webster said the charity depends on the work of volunteers.
“We’re grateful to Peter and John for all that they have done andcontinue to do for RNLI Lerwick,” he said.
“Their dedicated work as volunteers really helps with the operation of the station and contributes to our vital fundraising to help us save lives at sea.”
