Community / Marathon running family raises fund for local charity

A FAMILY of seasoned marathon runners are heading for the French Riveria next month to complete another 42K run, this time in aid of the Shetland Care Attendant Scheme (SCAS).

Karen Fraser and her husband Maurice, together with daughter Karrie, are no strangers to long distance running, having completed many challenges over the years.

Fifty four year old Karen is well on her way to completing 20 marathons, and this will be her 19th in nine different countries since she became hooked on the longer distance almost 20 years ago.

Husband Maurice, 57, has done 12 marathons to date, while daughter Karrie, 30, has completed the London and Manchester marathons so far.

The family – from Burra – are joined again next month by 48-year old Craig Smith, who had previously teamed up with Maurice and Karen for his first marathon in Lisbon last year.

The four have now signed up for the French Riveria marathon, which will be run from Nice to Cannes on 9 November.

Karen said running was one of the most accessible forms of exercise there is.

“The hardest part, sometimes, is getting out the door, especially if the weather is not the best, but once you do you never regret it,” she said.

“It clears your mind, lifts your mood and fits into your lifestyle. “It’s simple and makes you feel great.”

All funds raised in this latest challenge will go towards the Market House-based care attendants’ scheme.

Karen, who has been managing the service for many years, said the charity make a “real difference” in its support for unpaid carers and is well worth supporting.

“Trained staff step in to care for loved ones, giving carers the chance to rest, recharge, and enjoy some well-deserved time to themselves — all while knowing their loved one is safe and supported.

“This service makes a real difference to families, helping carers continue to care for their loved ones at home, in their own communities, for as long as possible.

“Every penny raised stays in Shetland and goes directly towards supporting unpaid carers in our local communities.”
