BOTH of Friday’s NorthLink passenger sailings have been cancelled due to the weather.

NorthLink has warned that sailings on Saturday may also be called off.

LOCAL comedian Marjolein Robertson will be heading back to Shetland for a couple of storytelling events.

She will bring her Da Winters o Shetland folktale event to the Uyeasound Hall in Unst on 24 October, and Hymhus in Bigton the following night.

There will also be a storytelling workshop at Hymhus on 25 October at 3pm.

It is part of the Scottish Storytelling Centre’s October programme, with Robertson also due to perform at the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh on 26 October.

THE FIRE service was alerted to reports of a car on fire earlier today (Thursday).

However, the fire was already extinguished when a fire crew arrived, with the call coming in shortly after 1.20pm.

NORTHERN Isles MP Alistair Carmichael has welcomed the passage of a motion at Liberal Democrat Federal Conference in support of the UK space industry.

Among other things the motion calls for the UK Government to immediately review and renew the 2021 National Space Strategy Government, and to conduct a review of private spaceport initiatives.

Welcoming the motion, Carmichael – who has the SaxaVord Spaceport in his constituency – said: “The space sector has the potential to deliver high quality jobs in the isles and elsewhere – and gives a further impetus and urgency to the campaign for fixed links in Shetland.

“If the government wants to build an economy that works for the long term then they need to think about the big picture – and fully support our space sector.”
