FUNDING worth nearly £30,000 has been awarded to a new project which will produce an exhibition at the Shetland Museum showcasing the work of four artists who have been “systemically excluded”.
Scottish company Zya Community is leading the project, which is called Centring the Heritage and Experience of Creatives of Colour.
It will draw on themes of systemic exclusion, as well as the lived experiences of Shetland community members, including living with geographical isolation, the necessity of collective resilience and adapting to a landscape that can shape daily life.
The project has received funding worth £28,333 from Museums Galleries Scotland.
Director of ZYA Community Nikki Kilburn said: “Partnering with Shetland Museum and Archives through Delivering Change is a unique opportunity to reimagine how collections can inspire.
“This funding enables us to support artists to lead that process, ensuring creativity and community voices are at the heart of systemic change.”
AWARD-winning tenor saxophonist Harben Kay is heading to Mareel next week for a workshop on improvisation on Tuesday (7 October) and a performance the night after.
Kay is celebrating the release of their third album, The World I Live In, which is described as a powerful reflection on change and the creativity that emerges in times of transformation.
Shetland Arts said the musician – whose dad is from Lerwick – is “quickly becoming recognised as a leading creative voice in UK jazz”.
Tickets are available online or from Mareel.
