SHETLAND councillors have approved a late licence for Hogmanay celebrations at Lerwick arts venue Mareel.

Members of the Shetland licensing board met on Monday morning to give the thumbs up to extending hours from 1am to 3am on Thursday 1 January.

Councillors convened in the meeting room at the Town Hall in Lerwick for a meeting which only had one item on its agenda – with things wrapped up in just two minutes.

Members had no questions about the application, with the only contributions in debate coming from those who wished to propose that the board approve the application.

Lerwick North and Bressay councillor Stephen Leask said he would “happily approve” the application, with Liz Peterson seconding.

Meanwhile Mareel says its cafe opening hours will be affected this week by staff shortages.

As it stands the cafe/bar will be open from 10am to 9pm on Monday and Tuesday, before closing on Wednesday.

On Thursday it will be 10am to 9pm, while on Friday and Saturday it will be open from 5pm to midnight. On Sunday the hours will be 1.30pm to 9pm.

The venue added in a social media post that it hopes to be able to open additional hours to what is listed, depending on staff availability.

It also said that during hours when the cafe/bar is closed there will be service available from front of house.

Mareel is usually closed on Mondays but it is open today to cater for those in Shetland for Wool Week.
