News / Police investigating after video of driver on wrong side of road

POLICE are investigating after a car was videoed driving dangerously and almost causing a collision on Friday.

The incident was recorded on dashcam, and posted on social media, showing a car with a foreign licence plate driving on the wrong side of the road into the face of oncoming traffic.

It then veers onto a verge to avoid a crash.

Shetland area commander Chris Sewell confirmed they had received a report of a car driving dangerously on the A970 north of Lerwick last Friday.

“Officers attended and carried out enquiries but were unable to trace the vehicle,” the chief inspector said.

“There are no reported injuries.

“Officers are aware of a dashcam footage circulating on social media and extensive enquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“Anyone who saw a vehicle driving dangerously on the A970 on the morning of Friday, 15 August, 2025, is asked to contact police. Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone else with dashcam footage.

“Please contact 101, quoting incident 1168 of 15 August.”

It comes weeks after road policing officers handed visitors arriving at Edinburgh Airport and hiring cars wristbands, reminding them of Scottish road safety advice.

Officers spoke to visitors about navigating country roads, adhering to speed limits, and the importance of always keeping to the left-hand side of the road.

Tourists were given wristbands displaying the message ‘drive on the left’ in several languages, serving as a reminder during their stay.
